A lackluster review class
I wanted to post a quick update, which is another way of saying I am putting off studying. Tomorrow I have a test but I’m really lacking the motivation to study for it right now. Partly because I have already studied a lot over the weekend, and the other part is because of today’s class. My past experiences with review classes at Sogang have been good. They usually hand out a ton of review papers. The speaking teacher will usually review different grammars, offering advice, and lots of help. In general they are usually pretty warm towards the students. They even give out a small practice test for the students to try, so that way the students have an idea of what to expect.
So I went into class today with certain expectations, and they were really let down. I mean big time. Our teacher starts by handing out the practice exam, and I’m thinking, “Great! We are off to a good start!”, but then she gives us all the answers, right away. I’m thinking: what. just. happened. Is she serious right now? I did not see how that was helpful at all. In total, the practice exam had about 8 to 10 questions on it. So it wouldn’t have been that hard nor time-consuming to let us attempt it first and then tell us the answers. After that happened I was expecting to receive more practice worksheets, but that didn’t happen either. Our teacher collected our dialogue homework from over the weekend and proceeded to grade them. Afterwards, she handed them back out, and that was it. She proceeded to sit behind the computer for the remainder of the class period.
Today’s class was so frustrating. In the beginning of the class she did explain one grammar point before handing out the practice exam. However it was an explanation that I felt should have been given when we were first learning that grammar. It was very bare-bones to say the least.
My last speaking teacher from level 1 was phenomenal. She went above and beyond, and really poured her heart into teaching. It made an obvious impact on the other students and myself. Now I realize not all teachers are the same, but I was under the impression that most, if not all teachers at Sogang had similar passion and devotion in their teaching. I could not have been more wrong.
I won’t let a mediocre teacher and disappointing experience get me down. I’ve made it my goal to learn Korean and I’m not going to give up on that.
On a brighter note, it is cherry blossom season in Korea and they are just about at their peak. I’m planning to go sometime this week to see them in Yeouido. I’ve seen the blossoms around school and they are so pretty. Such a beautiful time of year.
